Join the Effort to Save the Bear

Thought I would share with you what a local couple is doing on Facebook. For those of you that don’t know Bear’s Restaurant in Ankeny closed it door after 43 years on Saturday December 11th. This couple had been going there for the past 40 years, with their parents as kids and now as couple themselves. After eating there one last time on Saturday they had a “what if” moment. And on Sunday started a “Save the Bear in Ankney” page on FB and is growing strong ever since. I figure as many people that know about this the better so I am passing this information on to all I know, in hopes that you will do the same.

Save the Bear in Ankeny Welcome to our attempt at saving the Bear! The way we figure it, if we can collect $10.00 from every Ankeny resident … past or present … (which realistically wont happen … so those who will donate need to dig deep!!) we will have enough money to pay off the debt owed by the Bear and there will be enough to get itstarted again!!! Help support the Bear! We will need to move quick tho … stay tuned for updates!

Ankeny Area Historical Society’s Museum Open Houses

The Ankeny Area Historical Society will holding it’s monthly open house on September 5, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at their two museums located at 301 SW Third St.
You will find a century-old 2-story farmhouse and a replica barn filled with artifacts and displays that brings the area’s past to life. In the barn, a corner cupboard built in the mid-1800’s by John Thompson Ankeney for his wife Anna Maria Newcomer Ankeney from her favorite walnut tree is on display. On display in the house also from the Ankeney family are a spinning wheel and wash basin with stand. Martha Ankeney Schaffer Goldberg of Alaska donated them.

Ankeny Unplugged

The Ankeny Jaycees will host Ankeny Unplugged on September 9. The event will feature a tailgate theme as the state gears up for the rivalry game in Iowa City on the 11^th. Food and beverages will be available from Outback Steakhouse, Pizza Hut and Budweiser. There will be live music from Summercamp and a silent auction featuring a number of great Iowa State and University of Iowa items.

The event will be held from 5-9 at the Ankeny Bandshell and is family friendly. Admission is $3 at the gate; 12 and under are free. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to not-profit organizations supporting the Ankeny Community.
